D-Link DSL-2730B connection issues

So, supplied a customer with a D-Link DSL-2730b wireless N 150 ADSL 2/2+ Modem Router that was subsequently returned as faulty.  Tested in the workshop and found that it could not detect ADSL on the line that had previously had Telecom supplied Thomson TG585 and Linksys WAG310 working just fine.  Reinstalled the Linksys and no issues connecting.

After numerous hours Googling, I emailed D-Link and much to my surprise I had a reply within 30 minutes.  The answer was that Telecom NZ DSLAM equipment was having problems communicating with the Broadcom chipsets used in the 2730B, and that Telecom were "working on the problem".  The interim solution was to revert the 2730B to ADSL 1, as described here

ftp://files.dlink.com.au/products/DSL-2730B/REV_A/SetupGuides/DSL-2730B_How_to_connect_via_ADSL1.pdf

While this solution may get a connection up and running for a desparate end-user, its not really acceptable given that the modem is sold as ADSL2/2+.  In my opinion, I think D-Link should remove the 2730B from sale in NZ until the problem is resolved, given that they're not likely to sell it with a warning about the issue.

In the meantime, I guess it's buyer beware!

Samsung Galaxy GT-I5503T Android Phone MMS issues

After much searching, talking to Telecom etc I found out how to get my phone to send a picture via messaging.

Here are the basic instructions if you are on Telecom:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Open Wireless and Networks
  3. Open Mobile networks
  4. Open Access Point Names
  5. Open your settings (Probably TelecomDefault)
  6. Scroll down to MMSC and make sure it has http://lsmmsc.xtra.co.nz (the default settings might have that first s missing)

Create your message with picture attached and choose send.

Hold down the "Lock Key", choose Mobile network if it says below this that "Connect to Internet is OFF".  Wait for picture to be sent, and repeat holding down the lock key if you want to turn Connect to Internet back off.'

To view a picture received you will also need to connect to the internet.

Costs 20 cents per text to Telecom phones.

Let me know if you need any further information.

Your Domain Mail settings

If you're using a mail client such as Windows Live Mail, or Microsoft Outlook, you'll need to set up an account through the Tools menu so that you can access mail being sent to you at your domain.

The incoming and outgoing mail servers use the same name for both POP3 and SMTP – mail.yourdomain.  The exception to this is when some Internet providers block a function called SMTP Relay in an attempt to control SPAM.  If you set up your new mail account only to find the no one is receiving the mail you're sending, change the SMTP server to be that of your ISP and the problem should go away.  As always, there's one exception that I know to this, and this is Telecom NZ's Xtra, where you may also need to add the email address to their safe senders list.

MySQL Menu

Login to your file manager, select the “Home” hyperlink down the bottom left and then the MySQL Menu.  You will need to create a database and user.  phpMyAdmin is also accessed from this page and will open in a new tab/window, asking for the login.  If you are using a CMS programme you may not need to login to this but you will most likely still need to create a database, user and login.

FTP/File Manager Login

Your account details will be sent to you once you have registered with us.

Log into the DirectAdmin Login Page and select the “File Manager” hyperlink at the top left.  This will take you to a number of folders and files.  Your website needs to be loaded into the public_html folder. Your “index” file becomes the wesite “home” page.  Files can be uploaded via the File Manager selecting each by browsing one at a time.

I generally build my websites in Dreamweaver and use the FTP within this to upload them.

If you don’t have the ability to write and edit html or php for websites, you may prefer to use a CMS like WordPress.  Coffeecup is one free FTP programme that could be used to load your files in a timely manner.

Configuring Domain Aliases

Ok, you've had a spend up and purchased a domain name, you've got the hosting sorted (with us of course!) and now you've realised you need a second domain name to cover a specific product line, and you want it to point to the main web site.  No problems, in the hosting Control Panel, scroll to the Advanced Features area towards the bottom of the page and click on "Domain Pointers".  Enter in the secondary domain name, then save.  It'll take some time for the change to be picked up by the internet (up to 24hrs), but once done, anyone going to the secondary url will be directed to the main web site.

Closing Programmes

When closing programmes if at all possible please go to the file menu and choose exit, or close the programme using the “X” in the right hand corner of the screen. DO NOT use Alt-F4 unless there is absolutely no other way to get out of the programme as this means the settings that you (or someone else) has set up in the programme will most likely not be saved.

Emails Printing in very Large Print?

This problem may be associated with the text size selected  in your email programme (e.g. Outlook Express and/or your internet browser (e.g. Internet Explorer).  To fix this in Outlook Express or Internet Explorer choose ViewText Size – and check the appropriate size, usually Medium. I found when reproducing this problem that it still occurred with only Internet Explorer’s text selected as Large, so do try changing both.

“Hang up after sending and receiving” option on Outlook Express

There are two ways of changing this option:

  1. Choose ToolsOptionsConnection tab – and check/uncheck the “Hang up after sending and receiving” option.  Click Apply and then OK
  2. If you choose “Send/Receive” on Outlook Express a box will appear with a “Hang up when finished” option (once the computer is connected) that can be checked/unchecked if you are quick.

Outlook Express removing “unsafe attachments”?

This is a common problem when we forget to go in and alter the settings in outlook express, although sometimes it doesn’t need to be done??.  To solve this follow these directions: ToolsOptionsSecurity tab – un-check the box that says “Do not allow attachments to be opened or saved that could potentially be a virus” – click Apply and then OK.
